Assam Government Enhances Security with New Commando Battalions
Strengthening Assam's Security Framework
Tinsukia, Feb 27: On Friday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the expansion of Assam Police's commando battalions will significantly bolster security measures in the state. This announcement was made during the inauguration of the 6th Commando Battalion headquarters located in Ambikapur, Tinsukia district.
During the inauguration, the Chief Minister emphasized the government's commitment to modernizing Assam's security infrastructure.
"These battalions are essential for preparing Assam to face new security challenges. Given the changing security landscape, we have decided to enhance our forces and improve our readiness," Sarma stated.
He noted that upon taking office in 2021, the government pledged to establish several new commando battalion centers throughout the state.
"When I became Chief Minister in 2021, we committed to creating five new commando battalions. Previously, Assam had only one battalion based in Nandakata, Kamrup district," he explained.
Sarma mentioned that the new battalions are strategically located in various districts to enhance security and border protection.
"We have set up these battalions in Dholcherra (Hailakandi), Geleki (Sivasagar), Pabhoi (Biswanath), and Doldoli (Karbi Anglong). The 5th battalion was launched on October 4 last year at Pabhoi, and today we are inaugurating the 6th battalion here in Ambikapur," he added.
Describing this initiative as a significant milestone, the Chief Minister highlighted that the battalion campus features modern facilities.
"The campus spans 331 bighas and is designed to house approximately 400 commandos. It includes modern barracks, 149 housing units, parade grounds, drill areas, a 10-bed medical facility, and a primary school. Additionally, Namghars, ATMs, and other essential amenities have been established on-site," he noted.
He also mentioned that the commando battalion in Diphu is ready for inauguration, while construction of other battalions is ongoing.
"The battalion in Sadiya will enhance security in the border regions of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. These efforts will contribute to improved preparedness and stability in the area," Sarma concluded.
