Financial Support for Kalaguru Foundation

On January 2, the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that the state will allocate Rs 2.90 crore, derived from the state GST of Zubeen Garg's recent film 'Roi Roi Binale', to the Kalaguru Foundation established by the late artist.

This announcement was made during a press event titled 'Natun Diner Alap' (Conversations of a New Day) held to celebrate the New Year.

Additionally, the Chief Minister revealed plans to appoint a Special Public Prosecutor by January 12 to represent the state in the ongoing investigation into Garg's death, ensuring that justice is served.

'We are currently consulting with several criminal lawyers and expect to finalize the appointment by January 6,' he stated.

Sarma also mentioned that the government intends to request the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court to establish a fast-track court for the case's proceedings.

'The high court will make the final decision, but we will submit our request,' he added.

Reflecting on the past year, he expressed sorrow over the loss of Zubeen, stating, 'The year 2025 was particularly tragic for all Assamese as we lost Zubeen, and the aftermath was shocking for everyone.'

Zubeen Garg tragically passed away under mysterious circumstances while swimming during the North East India Festival in Singapore on September 19.

The Assam police conducted an investigation and submitted a charge sheet within three months, but Sarma emphasized the need for justice to be achieved.

The trial for the seven individuals accused in Garg's death commenced last month at the Kamrup (Metro) District and Sessions Court.

The accused, including North East India Festival chief organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, Garg's secretary Siddhartha Sharma, his cousin Sandipan Garg, and two Personal Security Officers (PSOs), appeared via video link from Baksa Jail, while musician Shekharjyoti Goswami and singer Amritprava Mahanta participated online from Haflong Jail.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has charged Mahanta, Sharma, Goswami, and Amritprava with murder in the charge sheet submitted to the Chief Judicial Magistrate on December 12.

Sandipan Garg faces charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, while the two PSOs are accused of criminal conspiracy and misappropriation of entrusted funds.
