Enhancing Medical Tourism and Bilateral Relations

Guwahati, Jan 2: The Assam Government is actively seeking to enhance medical tourism by providing treatment options for patients from Bhutan in local hospitals, as stated by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota.

On Thursday, Kota engaged in an extensive dialogue with Sandeep Arya, the newly appointed Indian Ambassador to Bhutan, focusing on various aspects of improving Assam-Bhutan relations.

Kota informed that their discussions were fruitful, covering a broad spectrum of bilateral topics, ongoing projects, and future prospects aimed at fostering cooperation between the two regions, particularly in enhancing cross-border connectivity, economic collaboration, and cultural exchanges.

Key topics included the establishment of a Land Customs Station (LCS) at Samrang, which involves both interim measures and plans for a permanent facility as suggested by the Joint Committee. The upgrade of the Hatisar LCS to an Integrated Check Post (ICP) under the Land Ports Authority of India was also on the agenda, especially in relation to the proposed Gelephu Mindfulness City.

“We discussed the evolving idea of creating a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Assam, which would complement the Gelephu Mindfulness City, utilizing best practices from around the world,” he noted.

The review also included the proposed Bongaigaon–Gelephu railway line, addressing land acquisition challenges on both sides, with a focus on improving long-term regional and cross-border connectivity. Strategies to resolve current obstacles in cross-border road transport were also discussed to facilitate smoother trade and passenger movement.

Another significant area of focus was collaboration in education and healthcare, encouraging Bhutanese students to pursue higher education in Assam's esteemed universities and enhancing medical tourism through better access to healthcare services.

The potential for developing integrated tourist circuits in Bhutan, connected with Assam and the broader Northeastern Region, was recognized as a promising opportunity to boost tourism and cultural exchange.

“I reiterated Assam's commitment to strengthening ties with Bhutan, in close collaboration with the Indian Government, focusing on growth through connectivity and sustainable development. Sandeep Arya acknowledged the proactive stance of the State Government and reaffirmed India's dedication to enhancing Assam-Bhutan cooperation,” Kota concluded.

The meeting wrapped up with a mutual understanding of the importance of ongoing coordination and timely follow-ups on the initiatives discussed, along with a commitment to engage more with tourism stakeholders and private investors to explore beneficial opportunities.
