Guwahati, Aug 15: The flood situation in Assam has worsened, with the death toll climbing to 104 following another fatality in Sivasagar district. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that over 78,000 individuals are now affected across seven districts.

According to an official update released on Friday, floodwaters continue to impact 20 revenue circles and 313 villages in the districts of Nagaon, Golaghat, Sivasagar, Kamrup, Hojai, Jorhat, and Lakhimpur. The number of affected districts has remained consistent since the previous day.

Golaghat is currently the hardest-hit district, with 30,778 individuals affected, followed by Nagaon with 26,292 and Sivasagar with 12,480.

Previously, the number of affected individuals was reported at approximately 77,500.

The local administration is managing 31 relief camps, providing shelter to over 5,000 displaced persons, and operating 37 relief distribution centers in the impacted regions.

The ASDMA's report indicates that 8,268.71 hectares of agricultural land are submerged, and 42,105 livestock have been impacted by the flooding. Additionally, there have been reports of damage to homes, roads, and bridges in several affected districts.

In response to the crisis, an eight-member medical team from the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), departed for Assam on Friday to offer healthcare assistance in the flood-affected areas.

Dr. Akhtar Ali, president of the RDA, stated that the team, equipped with medicines and other relief supplies, was sent off from JNMC by AMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohsin Khan and the university's Public Relations Officer.

The medical professionals will spend a minimum of four days in the affected districts, conducting health camps and providing medical treatment, medications, and humanitarian aid to those impacted by the floods.

"The team will set up health camps to ensure that medical support reaches those affected by the floods," Dr. Ali mentioned.

The arrival of this medical team coincides with ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts, as authorities remain vigilant about potential post-flood health issues in various affected regions of the state.
