Severe Flooding in Assam Claims More Lives

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam worsened on Tuesday, with an additional 21 fatalities reported, bringing the total number of affected individuals to 564,000 across 16 districts, according to an official report.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) released a bulletin late at night, indicating that Sivasagar district was the hardest hit, recording 13 deaths in the past 24 hours. Charaideo followed with five fatalities, while Golaghat and Jorhat reported two and one death, respectively.

This brings the total death toll for this year's floods in Assam to 31.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans to visit the most severely impacted areas starting Wednesday to assess the ongoing relief and rescue efforts.

In a social media update, he stated, "The recent #AssamFloods, triggered by a cloudburst upstream, have caused significant distress for our citizens. Tomorrow, I will be visiting the flood-affected regions and relief camps in Charaideo, Nazira, Sivasagar, Sonari, Jorhat, and Teok to evaluate the relief operations."

The ASDMA reported that over 564,600 individuals in districts including Golaghat, Kamrup, Hojai, Dibrugarh, and others have been impacted by the floods, a rise from over 363,000 people in 15 districts reported on Monday.

Currently, 872 villages across 44 revenue circles remain submerged.

Sivasagar district alone has seen 359,535 affected individuals, followed by Jorhat with 87,662 and Charaideo with 72,646.

The bulletin also noted that 71 relief camps are operational, accommodating 12,284 displaced individuals, along with 202 relief distribution centers.

Rivers such as the Dikhou and Disang are flowing above the highest flood levels in Sivasagar town and Nanglamuraghat, while the Brahmaputra at Nematighat and other rivers are also above danger levels.

Multiple agencies, including the Air Force and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), are actively engaged in relief and rescue operations.

Train services have been disrupted for the second consecutive day due to floodwaters covering railway tracks.

Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma confirmed that train services on the Simaluguri-Namtiali and Simaluguri-Selenghat routes have been suspended due to severe flooding in Simaluguri town.

The NFR has canceled, diverted, or short-terminated several trains and is running additional special trains to assist stranded passengers.

"These special trains will operate until Friday and are expected to significantly aid stranded travelers. Additionally, some express trains between Mariani and Guwahati are still running," Sharma added.

To maintain mobile connectivity in Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has activated the Intra-Circle Roaming (ICR) facility until July 24, allowing subscribers to access services through any available telecom operator if their own network is down.
