Critical Flood Situation in Assam

Guwahati, July 23: In light of the severe flooding affecting Assam, Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached out to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, promising that an Inter-Ministerial Central Team would soon arrive to evaluate the damage and discuss potential assistance from the Centre for relief and rehabilitation efforts.

During a press briefing in Golaghat while reviewing the flood situation, Sarma confirmed that the Centre has pledged comprehensive support to the state grappling with the floods.

"The hardships faced by the people are immense. Agricultural lands, livestock, and vital documents have all suffered damage. We are committed to providing all possible assistance. Just moments ago, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured me that a Central team will be in the state either today or tomorrow," he stated.

As river levels continue to rise, the flood situation in Golaghat district has deteriorated further, affecting daily life.

Recent reports from the district administration indicate that 134 villages have been impacted by the current flooding, with over 20,000 individuals affected, including 10,499 women and 3,834 children.

To support those in need, the district administration has established 17 relief camps—nine in Golaghat, three in Morongi, two each in Khumtai and Bokakhat, and one in Dergaon.

The overall flood situation in Assam remains dire, with the death toll reaching 41 and more than 650,000 individuals affected across 11 districts.

Relief and rescue operations are ongoing, with the Army, Air Force, and other agencies actively involved, while drones are being utilized to deliver essential supplies to isolated areas.

Officials have reported that several major rivers in the state are still flowing above the danger mark.
