Significant Railway Developments in Assam
Guwahati, March 4: On Tuesday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled plans to enhance railway connectivity in the state by introducing new train stoppages at 52 railway stations, addressing long-standing requests from the public.
This announcement was made during a late-night live broadcast where the chief minister discussed various development projects and administrative measures.
Sarma explained that the decision stemmed from numerous appeals made by citizens and local representatives who have been advocating for better rail services in their areas.
“We have received numerous requests for train stoppages at various stations throughout Assam. After careful consideration, we have decided to implement 52 new stoppages to improve rail connectivity for the public,” Sarma stated.
He also mentioned that local MLAs would oversee the arrangements and officially inaugurate the new stoppages on Thursday, initiating services at the selected stations.
“These requests have been pending for a long time. Tomorrow, the respective MLAs will visit the stations to inaugurate the new stoppages, facilitating services for passengers,” he added.
Among the key stations benefiting from this initiative, Barpeta Road will host the Vande Bharat Express, while Diphu and Furkating will see the Rajdhani Express stopping, significantly enhancing connectivity for these areas.

Bijni will have stoppages for three trains: Howrah–Kamrup Express, Anand Vihar–Northeast Express, and Silghat Town–Nagaon Express. Hojai will see the Bangalore–New Tinsukia Express and Kolkata–Agartala Garib Rath Express stopping, while Jagiroad will accommodate the Jana Shatabdi Express and Agartala–Deoghar Express.
Additional stations benefiting from this initiative include Bokajan (Avadh Assam Express), Chabua (Kamrup Express), Chapar (Sairang Express), Dhansiri (Mariani Express), Gohpur (Shatabdi Express), Kokrajhar (Saraighat Express and Kamakhya–Karmabhumi Express), Pathsala (Brahmaputra Mail), Sarupathar (Jana Shatabdi Express), and Tihu (Brahmaputra Mail).
In Upper Assam and the hill districts, stations like Duliajan, Naharkatiya, Selenghat, Misamari, North Cachar, Maibong, and Longpotiya will also gain new train stoppages. Additionally, Naharlagun in Arunachal Pradesh will see stoppages for the Donyi Polo Express and Lachit Express, further enhancing connectivity between the two states.
“This is a long-awaited demand from the people. By adding stoppages at these stations, we are making railway services more accessible to a larger number of residents across Assam,” the chief minister concluded.
