Guwahati, Sep 15: Assam is poised to significantly upgrade its public transportation system by integrating an Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) into its Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses.

This initiative aims to enhance passenger safety, boost operational efficiency, and enrich the overall travel experience. The ITMS will facilitate real-time tracking of ASTC buses and introduce various digital functionalities.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the implementation of ITMS would transform the state's buses into not only smarter vehicles but also much safer ones.

“With ITMS, ASTC buses can now be tracked in real time, bringing technology right into the everyday journey of our people. From smarter operations to stronger safety systems, this is a new chapter for public transport in Assam,” Sarma shared on social media.

The ITMS will equip ASTC buses with GPS tracking capabilities, allowing for constant monitoring of their movements, thereby providing passengers and transport authorities with enhanced visibility over bus operations.

The ITMS will also facilitate improved scheduling, which could lead to shorter waiting times for passengers and better fleet management.

A crucial aspect of this initiative is the installation of emergency panic/SOS buttons within the buses.

Sarma indicated that these systems would be directly connected to control centers, enhancing emergency response capabilities and ensuring greater safety for passengers, especially women.

The upgraded system will also enable automated ticketing and electronic payments, minimizing the dependence on traditional ticketing methods and integrating digital payment options into daily public transport.

This technology-driven transformation aims to make ASTC operations more agile and effective while providing a safer and more convenient travel experience for all passengers.

This initiative is particularly vital in Assam, where public buses serve as a key transportation link between urban areas and smaller towns and rural regions.
