Guwahati, Aug 21: Gaurav Gogoi, the president of Assam Congress, has made a formal request to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a substantial financial aid package of ₹10,000 crore. This funding is intended to address the economic hardships faced by residents and to repair the damage inflicted on rural infrastructure due to the recent floods.
According to Gogoi, the proposed package is essential to mitigate the losses incurred by individuals and to restore vital infrastructure such as roads, shops, schools, and drinking water facilities. He expressed his concerns through a post on the social media platform X.
“I urge PM Modi to allocate ₹10,000 crore for Assam to alleviate the economic impact on the populace and to restore rural infrastructure, including roads, shops, schools, and drinking water,” stated Gogoi, who also serves as the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
He criticized the government for the slow response during what he described as one of the worst flood crises in decades, pointing out that the PM CARES Fund currently holds a balance of ₹8,452 crore.
“Does the Prime Minister truly care about the people of Assam? The latest audited report, which was released after a significant delay and without detailed notes, shows that nearly 93% of this fund is sitting in fixed deposits, with only ₹87.85 lakh utilized in FY 2024-25,” Gogoi remarked.
In response to the crisis, the Centre has allocated a mere ₹379.35 crore as the initial installment under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
Gogoi further alleged that the PM CARES Fund was established despite the existence of the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), which has a broader mandate for emergency responses.
“This fund was intended to pool resources from various sources. However, when Assam was in dire need, the PM CARES Fund did not provide the necessary support,” he added.
Instead, Assam had to depend on donations from organizations and individuals, raising a critical question: does the PM CARES Fund genuinely care for Assam?” Gogoi concluded.
