Assam CM Welcomes Supreme Court's Decision on Pawan Khera's Passport Case

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the Supreme Court's decision to suspend the transit bail granted to Congress leader Pawan Khera. The ruling comes amid allegations regarding multiple passports held by Sarma's wife. Sarma challenged Rahul Gandhi to publicly show his passport, emphasizing the need for transparency. The Supreme Court's bench has requested Khera to respond to the Assam government's petition within three weeks, while clarifying that Khera can still seek bail in Assam. The controversy has escalated with Khera's claims about the Sarma family's alleged wealth and properties abroad, which the Sarma family has strongly denied.

Supreme Court Ruling on Pawan Khera's Case

On Wednesday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his approval of the Supreme Court's decision to halt the one-week transit bail granted to Congress leader Pawan Khera in connection with an FIR filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. When questioned about Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's call for an investigation into multiple passport allegations against Riniki, the Chief Minister challenged Gandhi to publicly display his passport in the Lok Sabha.

Sarma stated, "In my view, the Telangana court cannot grant transit bail as he is not a resident of Telangana. The law will take its course... If I were to make such allegations against them, would he (Rahul Gandhi) say the same? Rahul should remember that he is not above anyone. He should show his passport to the media, and I will also present my wife's passport."

The Supreme Court today suspended the one-week anticipatory bail previously granted to Congress leader Pawan Khera by the Telangana High Court. Additionally, a notice was issued to Khera regarding the Assam government's petition challenging this bail. A bench comprising Justices J.K. Maheshwari and Atul S. Chandurkar has requested Khera to respond within three weeks to the notice issued by the Assam government. The Assam government is seeking to overturn the anticipatory bail granted by the Telangana High Court. However, the bench clarified that if Khera wishes to apply for anticipatory bail in Assam, today's order from the Supreme Court will not impede that process.

Khera has alleged that Chief Minister Sarma's wife holds three passports from India, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt, along with several luxurious properties in Dubai and a company in Wyoming, USA. The Sarma family has vehemently denied these allegations and has filed an FIR against the Congress leader.
