Assam CM Reaffirms Commitment to Uniform Civil Code Implementation

Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reiterated the government's commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), highlighting its inclusion in the BJP's election manifesto. His statements come amid renewed discussions on the UCC in BJP-ruled states. The UCC aims to unify personal laws across religions, addressing marriage, divorce, and inheritance. While the BJP advocates for gender equality and national integration through the UCC, opposition parties express concerns about potential impacts on India's cultural diversity. The article explores the implications of the UCC and the political landscape surrounding its implementation.

Guwahati, May 13: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, emphasized on Wednesday the BJP-led administration's dedication to enforcing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stating that all commitments outlined in the party's election manifesto will be honored.

After paying respects at the memorial of Assam's inaugural Chief Minister, Gopinath Bordoloi, Sarma remarked, “The UCC is included in our election manifesto. We are committed to implementing every aspect of our manifesto, including the UCC.”

His comments come as discussions about the UCC's implementation gain momentum in states governed by the BJP.

The Assam BJP unit has been advocating for the UCC's introduction in the state. With a majority in the assembly, the Chief Minister needs to convince his NDA partners to advance the UCC in Assam.

The UCC aims to replace personal laws based on religion that govern issues like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption with a unified legal framework applicable to all citizens.

In Assam, the ruling BJP has already initiated various reforms concerning marriage registration, restrictions on polygamy, land reforms, and addressing encroachment issues, which they claim align with their electoral promises.

Earlier this year, Uttarakhand became the first state in independent India to enact UCC legislation, following the BJP government led by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's approval in the Assembly.

However, the law is still awaiting full implementation due to procedural requirements.

The BJP has long championed the UCC, asserting that it would promote gender equality, justice, and national unity.

This issue has been a core ideological commitment for the party and is integral to its governance strategy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP officials have consistently supported the establishment of a uniform civil law across the nation, contending that varying personal laws for different communities contradict the principle of equal rights.

Conversely, opposition parties and various minority groups have voiced concerns regarding the proposal, arguing that it could threaten India's cultural and religious diversity. Critics have called for broader consultations prior to any nationwide UCC implementation.
