Guwahati, June 21: On Saturday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma introduced a plan for a dedicated digital platform aimed at homestays throughout Assam. This initiative is designed to enhance the state's tourism sector and facilitate international travelers in discovering and reserving authentic local experiences.
During a live session on a microblogging site, Sarma emphasized the need for Assam to pivot towards nature-based and community-focused tourism, especially after several countries, including Japan, Australia, and EU member states, lifted their travel restrictions.
The Chief Minister pointed out that while Assam has made significant strides in developing quality hotel facilities, many international visitors are now seeking immersive experiences rather than traditional luxury accommodations.
"As tourist numbers rise, we must be ready to provide superior hospitality and more meaningful experiences. Many travelers from Europe and other regions are not necessarily in search of five-star hotels, as they have access to such amenities in their own countries. They visit Assam to immerse themselves in nature, tranquility, local culture, and the unique lifestyles of our communities," Sarma remarked.
He stressed the significance of homestays, eco-tourism, and community involvement, advocating for accommodation options that foster a close connection with nature.
"We should promote homestays, eco-huts, campsites, and other hospitality models that are nature-centric. Tourists should have the opportunity to savor Assamese cuisine, cultural practices, and the lifestyles of various indigenous communities while enjoying the state's natural beauty," he added.
A crucial aspect of this vision is the establishment of a comprehensive online platform that would act as a central hub for booking and information regarding homestays across Assam.
"I urge the Tourism Department to create an attractive and user-friendly website where homestay owners can register. This single platform should allow tourists to explore and book homestays throughout the state, making Assam's tourism offerings more accessible and organized," he stated.
According to the Chief Minister, this portal would not only streamline travel planning for visitors but also enhance visibility for small entrepreneurs, local families, and rural tourism operators who rely on tourism for their livelihoods.
Sarma also encouraged residents, tourism stakeholders, and homestay owners to actively promote Assam on social media in both Assamese and English.
"We need to share Assam's story with the world. People should highlight their homestays, local traditions, cuisine, festivals, and natural attractions on social media. The more we promote Assam's unique identity, the more tourists we will attract," he remarked.
The Chief Minister highlighted tourism's potential as a significant job creator and noted that the state has a unique opportunity to reshape its global image.
"For years, Assam was perceived through the lens of conflict and instability, which deterred visitors. However, that perception is changing. We have the opportunity to position Assam as a premier tourism destination recognized for its hospitality, culture, and natural beauty," he stated.
Sarma further called on stakeholders to ensure cleanliness at tourist sites and invest in quality tourism infrastructure to improve visitor experiences.
Looking ahead to upcoming international events in the state, the Chief Minister mentioned that Assam is preparing to welcome several high-profile dignitaries in early July as part of its efforts to enhance global outreach.
"We are expecting important international guests in Assam on July 1, 2, and 3. We are working to place Assam on the global tourism and investment map, and this mission requires everyone's support and participation," he concluded.
