Assam CM Promises to Reveal Allegations Against Congress Leader by Month-End
Details on Allegations Against Gaurav Gogoi
Guwahati, January 10: The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that information regarding the alleged connections of state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi with Pakistan will be disclosed by the end of this month.
During a government event in Goreswar on Friday, Sarma informed reporters that the necessary documents concerning these allegations are currently being compiled.
“Our officials are diligently working on this. We aim to unveil everything before February, ideally by the end of January,” he stated.
Sarma also criticized Gogoi regarding the British citizenship of his wife and children, suggesting that the people of Assam would not accept someone with such ties in a revered position, referring to the chief minister's role.
The BJP and Sarma have consistently targeted the Lok Sabha MP, alleging that Gogoi's wife, Elizabeth Colburn, has connections with Pakistan's intelligence agency, ISI. Sarma mentioned that the delay in releasing the documents was due to the passing of cultural figure Zubeen Garg in September.
When questioned about whether these revelations would impact Gogoi's chances in the upcoming Assembly elections, Sarma emphasized that the matter transcends electoral politics. “Pakistan is our adversary. The concern is not about elections but about potential links with that nation,” he remarked, also questioning why Gogoi's children's citizenship status remains unchanged.
Later, in a press conference following a Cabinet meeting in Guwahati, Sarma revealed that the state government had intended to share this information in September but postponed it after Garg's death on September 19.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT) was established to investigate the alleged involvement of Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, who purportedly has ties to Gogoi's wife, in India's internal matters. The SIT submitted its findings to Sarma, who oversees the Home portfolio, on September 10.
Sarma mentioned that they are awaiting clarification from the Union Home Ministry under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act but assured that the information would be disclosed regardless of its arrival.
“This is a significant conspiracy. What we have is just the beginning,” he asserted.
In response, Gogoi has dismissed the allegations as “absurd, unfounded, and nonsensical,” accusing Sarma of acting like an “IT cell troll” devoid of factual basis.
