Guwahati, Aug 17: On Monday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that there is credible evidence indicating that drug traffickers may be responsible for the death of a police sub-inspector in a suspected hit-and-run incident in Dima Hasao district.
Sarma stated that authorities are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the demise of Sub-Inspector Nabajit Das, who was the officer in charge of the Laisong police outpost. He assured that more information would be disclosed as the investigation unfolds.
According to Sarma, "There is credible information that Nabajit Das was killed by peddlers. Police are investigating the matter and details will be shared later," during a press briefing in Guwahati.
Das was fatally struck by a vehicle while conducting a checkpoint in the Laisong area on Friday evening. Law enforcement has apprehended two suspects related to the incident, while two others remain at large.
The car involved, with the registration number AS-02-AJ-4335, was subsequently discovered abandoned nearby, as reported by the police.
Investigators are also looking into a potential connection between this vehicle and a suspected drug trafficking operation. The vehicle is said to be registered to an individual from Juria in the Nagaon district.
Sarma noted that drug traffickers have modified their routes for smuggling narcotics into Assam from Myanmar, now utilizing a path through Arunachal Pradesh.
He explained, "Previously, drugs were transported from Myanmar via Manipur and Mizoram, but now they are being routed through Changlang in Arunachal Pradesh and then Tinsukia."
"We are aware of their strategies and are actively addressing them," the Chief Minister emphasized.
Sarma reaffirmed the government's stringent approach towards combating drug trafficking, mentioning that a cartel with connections to Punjab was dismantled in Guwahati just three days prior.
The Chief Minister's comments came as investigators continued to delve into the details surrounding Das's death and its possible ties to drug trafficking.
