Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma to File Defamation Lawsuit Against Congress Leaders

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to file civil and criminal defamation lawsuits against senior Congress leaders for allegedly making false claims about him. The legal action, scheduled for February 9, follows accusations from Congress president Gaurav Gogoi regarding land acquisition by Sarma's family. Sarma has firmly stated that he will not be intimidated by political theatrics and has called for evidence to be presented in court. This announcement comes alongside his reaffirmation of the Assam government's stance against illegal immigration. The political landscape in Assam continues to heat up as both sides prepare for upcoming challenges.

Legal Action Against Congress Leaders

Jorhat, Feb 4: On Wednesday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans to pursue both civil and criminal defamation lawsuits against prominent Congress figures, citing what he termed false and damaging claims made against him earlier that day.

In a statement shared on a microblogging platform, Sarma indicated that he would initiate legal proceedings on February 9 against Jitendra Singh Alwar, Bhupesh Baghel, Gaurav Gogoi, and Debabrata Saikia, accusing them of making 'false, malicious, and defamatory' remarks during a press briefing.

"The age of hit-and-run politics is finished. If they possess even a shred of courage or proof, they should substantiate every accusation in a court of law. I refuse to be intimidated by propaganda, coordinated slander, or the political theatrics of those aligned with the Gandhi family," he stated in his post.

The Chief Minister's comments followed allegations made by Assam Congress president Gogoi, who claimed that Sarma's family had unlawfully acquired approximately 12,000 bighas (over 3,960 acres) of land throughout the state.

During a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan, Gogoi asserted that the Congress party had conducted an internal investigation that revealed 'startling findings.'

Earlier on the same day, Sarma reiterated the Assam government's commitment to a 'pushback' policy against illegal immigrants, emphasizing the need to create conditions that prevent those residing unlawfully from continuing to live in Assam.

While discussing Gogoi at a welfare-scheme seed-capital distribution event in Sivasagar, Sarma mentioned that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) report, set to be released on February 8, would disclose 'damning details' of what he described as a global conspiracy aimed at undermining Bharat.

"This is not merely an issue concerning one individual, but rather a challenge against a system. What we have uncovered thus far is only preliminary, as it involves international cooperation and electronic evidence," he remarked.

Akhil Gogoi, an MLA from Raijor Dal who was also present at the event, expressed his appreciation that the Chief Minister refrained from making political attacks during his address.

"What I found most commendable is that the Chief Minister did not engage in political discourse today, aside from explaining the scheme, nor did he target me," Gogoi stated.

Reaffirming his political position, the Sivasagar legislator declared, "Sivasagar is the heart of the indigenous Assamese community. I will contest in Sivasagar and emerge victorious."

He also announced that if his party gains power, the Orunodoi scheme would be expanded to include all eligible beneficiaries, with the monthly assistance increased from Rs 1,250 to Rs 3,000.
