Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Promises Implementation of CAA for Bangladeshi Hindus
BJP's Commitment to CAA and Security for Hindus
On Saturday, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, announced that the BJP is set to implement the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) extensively, assuring safety for Bangladeshi Hindus. Speaking to a news media outlet in Kolkata, Sarma remarked, "Migrants from Bengal are welcome; this is a positive development. However, Bangladeshi Muslims voted out of fear. Under the BJP government, no Bangladeshi Hindu has anything to fear. If Hindus are not safe in India, where else can they find safety?" He also took a jab at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's comments regarding 'eggs and fish', stating, "Come, eat with me. I will eat a kilogram more than them."
Confidence in BJP's Victory in West Bengal Elections
Sarma further expressed that TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee should not challenge Amit Shah, predicting that the results on May 4 will lead Abhishek to flee to Dubai. He expressed confidence in the BJP's success in the upcoming West Bengal elections.
Road Show for BJP Candidate Shankar Sikdar
During a roadshow for BJP candidate Shankar Sikdar in the Behala Purba assembly constituency, Sarma highlighted that Sikdar is contesting against TMC's Subhasish Chakraborty, who has held the seat for the last three elections. In the 2021 elections, Ratna Chatterjee defeated BJP's Payal Sarkar by a margin of 37,428 votes (17.1%). Earlier today, Sarma addressed a press conference in Kolkata, attacking the TMC and asserting that there are no Bengali Hindus in Assam's detention camps. He stated, "TMC members sometimes claim that there are many Bengali Hindus in Assam's detention camps. As the Chief Minister of Assam, I want to make it absolutely clear that there is not a single Bengali Hindu in those camps. If there is even one, I am ready to resign today."
Supreme Court's Empowerment of Assam
Sarma noted that the Supreme Court has empowered Assam with the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act of 1948, which allows a deputy commissioner to expel someone deemed an infiltrator within 48 hours. He believes that the illegal migration act established by Congress should be extended to all five states. He emphasized that under the CAA, Hindus have received protection. Discussing the BJP's electoral focus on illegal migration and demographic changes in West Bengal, Sarma stated, "Bangladeshi infiltration will originate from here, altering the demographics of West Bengal and subsequently affecting the entire country. Every Indian has a stake in the West Bengal elections, as it will impact everyone in India—primarily in Bengal and Assam, and then across the nation. When the numbers exceed 50 percent, demands for Sharia law will also begin. Secularism remains secure as long as demographics are balanced. Mamata claims that the BJP is spreading communalism. However, the BJP is not demanding the rule of the Gita in any state of India. But wherever demographic changes exceed 50 percent, demands for Sharia law governance will arise."
