Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Predicts NDA Victory in Upcoming Elections
Predictions for Upcoming Assembly Elections
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, has shared his forecasts regarding the distribution of seats among political parties for the upcoming assembly elections. He asserts that the ruling NDA is expected to secure between 90 to 100 out of 126 seats. During a press interaction, Sarma stated, 'We will win 90-100 seats in the forthcoming elections.' He anticipates that the Congress party will manage to secure 16-17 seats, while the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) is projected to win 5-6 seats. The Raijor Dal is expected to gain just one seat, and the Assam Jatiya Parishad is predicted to win none. Sarma expressed confidence in winning the Tihu and Nalbari seats by a significant margin, while he believes that the Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi, will only win a single seat in Dihing. He also mentioned that although there will be tough competition in Sivasagar, the NDA candidate is likely to emerge victorious.
Past Predictions and Current Outlook
Sarma's previous election forecasts have often proven accurate. He further claimed that the NDA would triumph in Dhubri and Golakganj, asserting that there is no competition in Guwahati, where he expects the NDA to win all seats by a comfortable margin. He also mentioned that the NDA would secure victories in all Lok Sabha seats in Dibrugarh, as well as in Lakhimpur and Kaziranga. According to him, the NDA candidates are poised for easy wins across all constituencies. He noted that the Congress party's standing in Upper Assam is weak, as the BJP has taken control of all seats in that region.
Political Dynamics in Assam
A political analyst pointed out that the tribal communities residing in tea gardens are now a majority and have shifted their allegiance from Congress to the BJP. Historically, Upper Assam was a stronghold for Congress, but the BJP managed to capture most of the seats during the 2016 assembly elections. The elections for all 126 assembly seats in Assam are scheduled to take place in a single phase on April 9. Meanwhile, the main opposition party, Congress, has criticized the Chief Minister, suggesting that he is living in a dream world.
