New Delhi, Aug 20: On the occasion of completing 100 days of its third term, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi to discuss strategies for flood recovery and the state's development agenda.
The meeting took place at Sewa Teerth in South Block, where Sarma provided Modi with an update on Assam's plans for the next phase of flood response, emphasizing the need to rebuild affected regions, restore livelihoods, and ensure a thorough recovery.
In a social media update after the meeting, Sarma noted, “Throughout the #AssamFloodResponse, Adarniya Modi Ji remained in constant touch, closely reviewing the situation and extending every possible assistance.”
The discussions primarily revolved around advancing recovery efforts post the catastrophic floods, particularly focusing on rebuilding and restoring the livelihoods of those impacted.
Sarma mentioned that Modi “reaffirmed the Government of India’s unwavering support in taking this mission to its logical conclusion.”
Additionally, the Chief Minister informed Modi about significant initiatives undertaken by the Assam government during its initial 100 days in office.
The talks also addressed broader development goals, including accelerating growth, enhancing infrastructure, improving public service delivery, and creating more opportunities for the residents of Assam.
This meeting occurred as Assam continued to deal with the consequences of severe flooding, especially in Upper Assam, prompting the state government to intensify relief, rehabilitation, and damage assessment efforts.
Following the floods that affected parts of Sivasagar and neighboring Charaideo, at least 105 fatalities have been reported, with 54 occurring in Sivasagar alone.
Although floodwaters have receded, many survivors are now faced with the challenge of rebuilding their homes and livelihoods.
To enhance transparency in the relief and rehabilitation process, the state government has made flood damage assessment data publicly accessible.
During a media briefing at Lok Sewa Bhawan on August 17, Sarma announced that the first-phase flood damage assessment list would be published on a dedicated web portal, enabling affected individuals to verify their recorded losses.
Currently, officials have assessed damage to 26,681 houses and 18,887 cattle sheds, along with losses related to raw materials for over 41,000 handlooms and 598,691 livestock.
Preliminary assessments indicate direct losses of approximately Rs 480 crore; however, Sarma cautioned that this figure only reflects about 30% of the affected population, and the final loss estimate could surpass Rs 1,000 crore.
The 100-day milestone follows the BJP-led alliance's significant victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, marking Sarma's third consecutive term in office.
Sarma characterized this milestone as part of the government’s vision for a ‘Viksit Assam,’ stating that the completion of 100 days is an opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to serving the populace sincerely and achieving new milestones in development and welfare.
