Guwahati, May 5:  Following a remarkable win in the Assam Assembly elections, where the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured an impressive 102 seats, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared insights into the reasons behind this overwhelming success.

During a press briefing in Dispur, Sarma credited the victory to the effectiveness of what he termed the 'double-engine government'.

He remarked, “The past five years have brought unprecedented development and progress to Assam,” highlighting the rapid economic growth and extensive welfare initiatives.

According to him, the government's focus on public safety and social stability significantly contributed to their success. “Our commitment to community security, along with financial assistance for the underprivileged and middle class, has been vital for sustaining livelihoods,” he explained.

Sarma also pointed out the BJP's firm stance against illegal encroachments by immigrants from Bangladesh as a crucial electoral issue. “This was a pivotal factor, and we remain dedicated to fulfilling all promises made during our campaign. We will continue to evict illegal encroachers,” he stated.

Emphasizing his campaign approach, the Chief Minister noted that maintaining a strong grassroots connection was essential. “I visited each Assembly constituency at least three times and engaged with around 2,000 individuals daily through social media and messages,” he added.

Looking forward, Sarma indicated that the next term would focus on the tangible execution of significant infrastructure projects.

“The initial five years were dedicated to planning, the next term will focus on laying foundations, and the following five years will be for inaugurations,” he elaborated.

He listed several key projects, including the Dhubri–Phulbari bridge, the Palasbari–Sualkuchi bridge, the Majuli–Jorhat bridge, and improved road connectivity aimed at reducing travel time between Silchar and Guwahati to five hours, along with a flyover over Kaziranga and a tunnel connecting Gohpur and Numaligarh.

Additionally, he mentioned the upcoming semiconductor facility in Jagiroad and various power projects as part of the state's development agenda.

Commenting on the success of newcomer Pradyut Bordoloi from Dispur, Sarma stated that the results reflected the party's strength rather than individual candidates. “Voters supported the BJP symbol, not just individual personalities,” he noted, while acknowledging that even Congress leaders like Bhupen Borah received votes due to their local influence.

In a critique of the Opposition, Sarma remarked that the Congress party suffers from a lack of effective leadership. “There is a shortage of leaders who truly understand politics or Assam,” he said, emphasizing that the election results demonstrated voters' preference for grassroots engagement over mere social media presence.
