Concerns Raised by Assam Chief Minister

Guwahati, Jan 13: Amid escalating tensions in Bangladesh, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has expressed serious concerns regarding the recent violent incidents targeting minority Hindus. He emphasized that both the state and central governments are vigilantly observing the situation to avert any repercussions in Assam.

During a press interaction at a seed capital distribution event in Sribhumi district, which borders Bangladesh, Sarma highlighted that the safety of Hindus in the neighboring nation is a significant moral issue for India.

“It is alarming to witness the Hindu community facing recurrent assaults in Bangladesh. We have a moral obligation to support the minority groups there and ensure they are not victims of violence or intimidation. The central government is aware of the situation, and Assam is on high alert,” Sarma stated.

The Chief Minister noted that the ongoing developments across the border are already impacting Assam, especially in districts adjacent to Bangladesh.

He mentioned that security measures have been intensified in sensitive border regions to prevent any spillover of violence into the state.

Sarma also indicated that the Assam government would formally request the Union government to implement necessary diplomatic and administrative actions to safeguard the Hindu community in Bangladesh.

While acknowledging that foreign relations are primarily the responsibility of the central government, he asserted that state governments can voice concerns when humanitarian crises threaten regional stability.

“The central government manages foreign affairs, but we will advocate for the prioritization of Hindu citizens' safety in Bangladesh. The recent violent incidents are unacceptable and must not be overlooked,” he remarked.

Previously, the Chief Minister had cautioned against viewing the situation in Bangladesh as isolated, particularly as reports of mob violence and targeted attacks against minority communities have surged.

He had previously stated that the rise in violence against minority groups in Bangladesh necessitates ongoing vigilance from both civil authorities and security forces.

“We must remain alert and continuously monitor developments across the border. Simultaneously, it is crucial to provide moral support and reassurance to the Hindu community in Bangladesh,” he added.

According to the 2022 census in Bangladesh, there are approximately 13.13 million Hindus, representing nearly eight percent of the total population.
