Chief Minister's Visit to Flood-Affected Areas

Guwahati, Aug. 8: On Saturday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the flood-affected regions of Mangaldoi to evaluate the extent of the damage and oversee relief and recovery operations.

During his visit, Sarma inspected the breached embankment and a relief camp located in Bengabari, where the swollen Noa River has wreaked havoc, displacing numerous families.

The Noa River, which has risen significantly due to heavy rainfall in Bhutan, breached its embankment earlier this week, leading to the inundation of several villages in the Mangaldoi vicinity.

Bengabari has experienced severe damage, with floodwaters eroding parts of the village center, while extensive areas in the Outala panchayat remain underwater.

Many families have been compelled to evacuate their homes and seek refuge in safer areas due to fears of further erosion and displacement.

During his assessment, Sarma stated that the government is vigilantly monitoring the situation and is taking prompt actions to reinforce the compromised embankment.

“The breach in the Noa River's embankment has caused significant distress for the residents. I came here to witness the situation firsthand and to review the efforts of the Water Resources Department. We are committed to strengthening the embankment and ensuring that all necessary support reaches the affected families,” Sarma remarked.

While floodwaters have started to recede in certain parts of Mangaldoi, many families still reside in relief camps, and others have taken refuge on embankments after losing their homes.

The Chief Minister also assessed the ongoing relief efforts and restoration initiatives in the impacted areas, with the Water Resources Department prioritizing the reinforcement of the damaged embankment to avert future flooding.

Sarma was joined by Ministers Ashok Singhal and Nilima Devi, along with MLA Paramananda Rajbongshi and senior district officials during his visit.
