Guwahati, Apr 6: On Monday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma refuted claims made by the Congress party regarding his wife's alleged possession of multiple passports and properties in Dubai, asserting that these accusations stem from misleading information circulated by a Pakistani social media group.

During a press briefing at Vajpayee Bhawan, Sarma responded to inquiries from Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi about whether his family has assets in Dubai or companies in the USA, stating that such allegations are intended to sway electoral outcomes, which he described as "punishable under the law."

The BJP leader further accused the Congress of sourcing documents from a social media group named "Pakistanis in Ajman," claiming that his wife's image was manipulated onto a lost passport belonging to an individual from Pakistan.

"I am alarmed that they resorted to assistance from Pakistan. This is not merely a case of fraud; it constitutes a crime against the nation," he remarked.

Sarma asserted that there is an ongoing attempt by Pakistan to meddle in the Assam elections, pointing out that at least 11 television talk shows have suggested that the Congress party should emerge victorious.

He mentioned that his wife has lodged a complaint against Congress spokesperson Khera, expressing confidence that the police will take appropriate legal measures.

The Chief Minister emphasized that these allegations were strategically timed before the elections to manipulate the results, labeling it a "criminal offense and punishable under the law."

Sarma expressed disappointment that Gaurav Gogoi, son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, would engage in such baseless accusations against his wife.

He also claimed that the Congress party has a history of employing similar smear tactics.

“The Congress previously attempted this strategy in the St. Kitts case; those days are behind us. Any fabrication will face the full weight of the law—my legal team is already mobilized,” he stated in a social media post.

Congress leader Khera had alleged on Sunday that the Chief Minister's wife holds three passports from the UAE, Egypt, and Antigua-Barbuda, along with two properties in Dubai and assets in shell companies.
