In a recent statement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma defended the police's actions against Congress leader Pawan Khera, asserting that law enforcement is fulfilling its duty in a case initiated by Khera's wife. Sarma criticized Gaurav Gogoi, questioning his family's nationality and visibility during the election campaign. The CM's remarks highlight ongoing political tensions in Assam as the state navigates its electoral landscape. This article delves into the details of Sarma's defense and the implications for Assam's political climate.

Chief Minister's Defense of Police Actions

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, has come forward to support the police's actions against Congress leader Pawan Khera, asserting that law enforcement agencies are fulfilling their responsibilities in a case filed by Khera's wife. Speaking to reporters after the conclusion of voting for the Assam Assembly elections, Sarma stated that the police have been deployed to address Khera's situation. He emphasized that it is not the Ulfa but the police that are pursuing him. If there is an FIR, it is the police's duty to take action.

Police's Role in Legal Matters

Sarma further remarked that the police are bound by law and are acting appropriately by visiting the residence of an individual named in the case. He noted that police officers are compensated for entering the homes of criminals. These comments came in response to Khera's allegations that Sarma was using the police against him due to accusations involving Sarma's wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma. Following the complaint, Assam police had searched Khera's residence in Delhi but did not find him there.

Targeting Gaurav Gogoi

Sarma also took aim at Gaurav Gogoi, the president of Assam Congress, questioning the nationality of his family. He pointed out that Gogoi had gone to vote in Jorhat with his mother but not with his wife, contrasting this with his own experience of voting alongside his spouse. Sarma suggested that if Gogoi's wife had accompanied him, it would have been more commendable. He further claimed that this situation supports his assertion that Gogoi has failed to make his family feel Indian. Sarma questioned how someone like Gogoi could serve the state.

Continuing Criticism

Continuing his critique, Sarma noted that throughout the election campaign, no one had seen Gogoi's wife or children. He questioned how they could criticize him when they have not been visible. Sarma expressed pride in Assam, stating that Gogoi's father, Tarun Gogoi, who served as Chief Minister three times, also took pride in the state, unlike Gogoi himself.
