Assam CM Defends Chargesheet in Zubeen Garg Murder Case Amid Opposition Criticism
Chief Minister's Strong Rebuttal
Guwahati, Dec 16: On Tuesday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma firmly rejected claims that the chargesheet in the murder investigation of cultural figure Zubeen Garg is inadequate. He questioned how critics could evaluate a document that has not yet been presented in court.
In a pointed response to opposition leaders and commentators, Sarma stated that their assertions "lacked substance and revealed their political motives".
“How can they know the contents of the chargesheet? Where did they access it? Did the judge disclose whether it states ‘A’ or ‘B’? This indicates that the opposition lacks seriousness and purpose. Their statements and the questions they raise already demonstrate that,” the Chief Minister remarked.
Sarma emphasized that the investigation was conducted in accordance with the law and warned against making premature judgments that could politicize a delicate case.
He reiterated that the validity of the chargesheet would be assessed through the judicial process, not through political opinions.
The Chief Minister's comments come in the wake of ongoing criticism from opposition parties, who have pointed out alleged shortcomings in the investigation.
On December 14, just two days after the Special Investigation Team (SIT) submitted the chargesheet, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee accused the SIT of presenting a superficial chargesheet in the Zubeen Garg case, suggesting it was designed to quell public outrage rather than ensure accountability for the singer's tragic death.
“Such documents merely create an illusion of seriousness. What is needed are solid evidence, witnesses to back the claims, and the recovery of the tools used in the crime,” former Congress MP Ripun Bora stated.
Nonetheless, Sarma insisted that these allegations are speculative and aimed at misleading the public.
“The opposition should let the legal process unfold instead of making unfounded claims,” he added, reaffirming the government's commitment to achieving justice through lawful means.
