Investigation Update on Zubeen Garg's Case

Guwahati, Dec 5: On Friday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) looking into the death of renowned singer and cultural figure Zubeen Garg has finalized its investigation, compiling approximately 3,500 pages of documentation.

The Chief Minister indicated that the chargesheet is anticipated to be submitted between December 6 and December 12.

While attending the inauguration of the ACA stadium in Dima Hasao, Sarma stated, “The SIT has concluded its investigation, and nearly 3,500 pages of documents have been prepared. A meeting was conducted yesterday with the Advocate General to finalize the forthcoming steps.”

He emphasized the importance of receiving the chargesheet within the designated timeframe.

“We should obtain the documents before December 18; otherwise, the accused currently incarcerated may qualify for bail,” he noted.

Sarma reiterated his previous claim that the singer's death is unequivocally a murder case.

Previously, on November 25, Sarma had asserted that the singer's death was indeed a murder, as the Assembly deliberated on an adjournment motion during the opening of the five-day winter session. He mentioned that the government had classified it as murder from the third day of the SIT investigation, which commenced on September 23.

“All suspects have been charged under BNS Sections 61, 105, and 106. We also requested the Gauhati High Court to incorporate Section 103 (previously IPC 302). Initial investigations confirmed that it was not a case of negligence but murder. If Section 103 were not added, all suspects could have been released on bail,” he informed the House.

Sarma expressed confidence in the findings of the SIT.

“We have uncovered numerous details that were previously unknown in the state. The term ‘murder’ is now officially recorded. One individual committed the act while several others aided,” he stated.

He also clarified that the investigation would persist even after the chargesheet is filed to ensure that all individuals involved are identified and held accountable.

“As the court will deliver the final judgment, the inquiry will continue to reveal any remaining information,” Sarma concluded.
