Infrastructure Development Announced
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Tinsukia on Wednesday
Guwahati, Oct 29: During his recent visit to Tinsukia, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a significant investment of Rs 200 crore aimed at enhancing roads and drainage systems, alongside plans for a new integrated District Commissioner’s office and a Rs 50 crore auditorium.
Sarma recognized the district's historical neglect in infrastructure and urban development, emphasizing the need for improved civic amenities, public spaces, and educational facilities while advocating for increased industrialization.
Speaking at Manab Kalyan Bhawan, he revealed plans for a modern District Commissioner’s office that will consolidate various government departments into a single location, replacing the outdated administrative building.
“The existing District Commissioner’s office is quite old. We are set to construct a new integrated facility that will house all offices together,” he stated.
This new office aims to streamline government operations and enhance public service accessibility as part of the state’s decentralization efforts.
Investment in Roads and Drainage
The Chief Minister also announced a one-time funding of Rs 200 crore dedicated to road construction and drainage improvements throughout the district.
“I trust that the Tinsukia Municipal Board and the local MLA will engage with residents to identify which roads require construction and the necessary drainage projects,” he added.
Additionally, he allocated Rs 50 crore for a state-of-the-art auditorium with a capacity of 1,000 seats, highlighting the need for a venue for public meetings and gatherings.
Other infrastructure initiatives include a new bus terminus, a multi-level parking facility, and enhancements to Kochujaan Stadium.
The government is also set to improve street lighting across Tinsukia, with modernization efforts for the district library already in progress.
Enhancing Parks and Digital Services
The urban development strategy encompasses the beautification of Saheed Piyoli Phukan Playground with an investment of Rs 8 crore, a revival scheme for Borgodha Pukhuri, and enhancement projects for Mahatma Gandhi Park and Bishnu Rabha Park.
To improve municipal services, the “Samagra Seva” app, developed at a cost of approximately Rs 1.5 crore, will allow residents to track garbage collection in real-time and access property tax and trade license services from their homes.
Plans for Higher Education
Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to establishing a university and an engineering college in Tinsukia, following the development of a medical college in the district.
He mentioned that this initiative aligns with the government’s electoral promise to set up a medical college, a university, and an engineering college in each district.
“During the last election campaign, we pledged to establish one medical college, one university, and one engineering college in every district. I am confident that after the medical college is completed in Tinsukia, we will also see the establishment of a university and an engineering college soon,” he remarked.
Addressing Development Gaps
Sarma acknowledged that Tinsukia has lagged behind other regions in Assam regarding infrastructure and beautification, despite its contributions to the state’s economy.
“The residents of Tinsukia have played a vital role in the state’s economic growth. However, there is a perception that Tinsukia has not kept pace with other areas in terms of development. As Chief Minister, I recognize that we have not done enough here. We must do more for Tinsukia,” he stated.
He emphasized the necessity of creating a conducive environment for industrial growth, asserting that the district's economic progress requires a renewed focus on industrialization and public support.
“To foster Tinsukia’s economic development, we need to cultivate a new atmosphere for industrialization, which will require the community's backing,” Sarma concluded.
The announcements encompass immediate civic needs, including road and drainage improvements, as well as long-term plans for administrative infrastructure, public amenities, higher education, and industrial development.
