Guwahati, Oct 5: On Monday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated a series of infrastructure initiatives totaling Rs 711 crore in Bongaigaon district, prominently featuring the Bongaigaon Medical College and Hospital.
“The Bongaigaon Medical College and Hospital stands out as the most significant among the projects inaugurated today,” Sarma remarked during the opening ceremony.
With an investment of Rs 611 crore, this facility marks the 15th medical college in Assam, as stated by Sarma.
“Medical education and healthcare services will commence from Monday,” he confirmed.
Sarma acknowledged previous doubts regarding the establishment of a medical college and hospital in Bongaigaon.
Highlighting the growth of medical education in Assam, he noted that prior to the BJP-led government taking office in 2014, the state had only six medical colleges and hospitals.
“Now, the number has risen to 17, including AIIMS and ESIC,” he added.
He also mentioned that construction is ongoing for nine additional medical colleges in various locations, including Charaideo, Biswanath Chariali, and others.
The Chief Minister reflected on Bongaigaon’s progress over the last five years, citing improvements such as enhanced road connectivity through the Asom Mala initiative, a convention hall, a stadium, an engineering college, and the new medical college.
“I have witnessed the transformation of Bongaigaon district firsthand over the past five years. The developments, from road infrastructure to educational institutions, have modernized the city,” he stated.
Sarma noted that the state government had laid the groundwork for projects worth Rs 700 crore in Bongaigaon in 2022, followed by Rs 555 crore in July 2023, and an additional Rs 171 crore in March 2024.
“All these projects are now becoming a reality and are set for their inauguration,” he remarked.
Before the medical college's inauguration, Sarma also opened the Integrated District Commissioner’s Office, which cost Rs 50 crore.
Other projects inaugurated included the Adarsha Residential School at Kachari Para, costing Rs 30 crore; Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Adarsha Mahavidyalaya at Tulubhiya, at Rs 11 crore; Sri Sri Raghunath Bigraha Mandir Satra at Srijangram, worth Rs 6 crore; and Adarsha Secondary School at Birjhara Tea Estate, costing Rs 3 crore.
Additionally, he unveiled a statue of Maharaj Naranarayan, which was developed at a cost of Rs 34 lakh.
Sarma also mentioned the government's plans to transform Bongaigaon College into Bongaigaon University, stating, “If everything proceeds as intended, the government will allocate Rs 100 crore for new infrastructure for the proposed university.”
Earlier, Sarma congratulated the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) led by Hagrama Mohilary on completing one year in office.
In a social media update, he emphasized the collaborative efforts of the NDA governments at the Centre, in Dispur, and in Kokrajhar to foster development in the area.
He highlighted the implementation of welfare schemes such as Orunodoi, CMAAA, MMUA, and free ration distribution in the region.
Furthermore, the government has approved a special Rs 1,000-crore package aimed at enhancing road infrastructure and positioning the region as a manufacturing and logistics hub.
Sarma also reiterated the government's commitment to executing the provisions of the Bodo Peace Accord under Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure enduring peace in the area.
