Assam Chief Minister Highlights AGP's Role in Upcoming Elections
AGP's Significant Role in Elections
Guwahati, Dec 5: On Friday, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is poised to play a crucial role in the forthcoming elections, with discussions between the BJP and AGP advancing significantly.
The Chief Minister suggested that the majority of seats within the alliance would likely be allocated to AGP, reinforcing the enduring collaboration between the two parties.
During a meeting with senior AGP leader and minister Keshab Mahanta on Wednesday, Sarma indicated that formal discussions with the regional party would commence soon.
“Negotiations regarding seat-sharing have progressed considerably. We are open to collaborating in various constituencies, with AGP candidates likely to contest most seats,” he stated.
He also mentioned that similar discussions would be held with other regional parties.
“I believe we need to conclude talks with AGP, Rabha Hasong, and Gana Shakti by January 15, ahead of Magh Bihu. The framework for the alliance should be established by then,” Sarma added.
Reiterating the BJP’s commitment to fostering young leadership, the Chief Minister expressed the party's intention to nominate more youth and women in the upcoming elections.
“Each year, we strive to incorporate more youth and women into the BJP. Previously, Taranga Gogoi was elected, and this time, we aim for candidates even younger than him to represent the party,” he emphasized, highlighting the BJP’s focus on youth.
Sarma contrasted the BJP-led alliance’s “development-oriented approach” with what he characterized as Congress’s internal disarray and lack of direction.
“Recently, Congress held meetings that focused on trivial issues, such as the number of hoardings put up by the BJP. Just yesterday, they had a two-hour Zoom meeting discussing who leaked their internal information, yet the meeting included those responsible for the leak. So, we already know the outcome,” he remarked.
He further claimed that Congress leaders themselves seemed to lack faith in their party's future.
“Members of Congress do not wish for their party to succeed. They prefer the BJP to win because development is evident everywhere. Congress ruled for 15 years; did anyone ever mention Umrangsho? It is the BJP that is driving development in areas like Umrangsho and Karbi Anglong,” Sarma stated.
He asserted that peace and stability in these regions were only achieved after the BJP came to power.
“Under Congress rule, there was turmoil, and only the military was present. Today, development is taking place,” he concluded.
