Cabinet Expansion Announcement

On Sunday, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, revealed plans for an expansion of his cabinet, which will take place next week with the swearing-in of new ministers. Sarma was sworn in as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term on May 12, administered by Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several central ministers, chief ministers from states governed by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and other dignitaries.

Alongside Sarma, four other ministers took their oaths, including Ajanta Neog and Rameshwar Teli from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Atul Bora from the Assam Gana Parishad, and Charan Boro from the Bodoland People's Front (BPF). Sarma expressed his excitement on social media platform 'X', stating, "I am pleased to announce that the Assam government's cabinet will be expanded on June 5, 2026."

However, he did not disclose the number of new ministers or their names. The BJP-led NDA has secured power in the state for the third consecutive term, winning a total of 102 seats in the 126-member assembly. In the elections held on April 9, the BJP won 82 seats, while its allies, the Assam Gana Parishad and BPF, each secured 10 seats.
