Assam Cabinet Establishes Fast-Track Court for Zubeen Garg Case
Formation of Fast-Track Court Approved
Guwahati, Feb 27: In a pivotal decision aimed at facilitating swift justice, the Assam Cabinet has sanctioned the establishment of a specialized fast-track court to handle the daily proceedings related to the case concerning the late singer Zubeen Garg.
This resolution was reached during a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at the Lok Sewa Bhawan. The initiative responds to the increasing public interest and the family's urgent request for a prompt trial.
During a press briefing, Sarma announced that the state government intends to formally approach the Gauhati High Court to set up a dedicated sessions court under Section 346(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which will facilitate daily hearings for this case.
“The Cabinet has endorsed the creation of a specialized court for the continuous trial of the case. We will submit a request to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, who will then decide on the court's establishment and the subsequent proceedings,” Sarma explained.
He emphasized the government's dedication to ensuring a transparent and timely judicial process, given the sensitive nature of the case.
“This case holds significant emotional and social importance. Zubeen Garg's family has publicly called for a fast-tracked trial. In light of their request, the Cabinet has resolved to advance this proposal,” he remarked.
The Chief Minister also noted that the government had previously contemplated continuing the trial with the current judge, as no defendants had been granted bail thus far. However, the family's appeal for a quicker trial led to the current decision.
“We believed that maintaining the case with the existing court could ensure continuity. Yet, respecting the family's request for a fast-track approach, we have agreed to their plea in the broader interest of justice,” Sarma stated.
As per the decision, the Gauhati High Court will designate a judge and provide necessary guidelines for the operation of the special court. The state government will ensure all logistical and infrastructural support needed for seamless proceedings.
This initiative is anticipated to accelerate the judicial process and clarify a case that has garnered significant public attention throughout Assam.
