GUWAHATI, June 8: After years of dedication and hard work, Assam's boxer Gitimoni Gogoi is ready to showcase her skills on an international platform.

The 26-year-old athlete from Moran has been selected to represent India at the World Boxing Cup 2026 (Stage 2), taking place in Guiyang, China, from June 15 to 21. This marks her debut in international boxing.

Expressing her mixed feelings, Gitimoni shared, “I feel both excited and nervous since this is my first international event. I am training diligently and concentrating on my performance to give my best.” She spoke over the phone from the national training camp in Patiala.

“The moment has arrived for me to demonstrate my abilities to the world,” she added.

Competing in the 70kg weight class, Gitimoni began her boxing journey at 17 in her hometown before relocating to Golaghat and eventually joining the Sports Authority of India center in Guwahati to advance her career.

Although she stands at 5 feet 3 inches, making her shorter than many in her category, she remains confident in her ability to compete against taller rivals.

“I will leverage my strengths, which include power and technique. Every boxer has their pros and cons. I am attentive to my coach's advice and striving to enhance my skills in the ring,” she stated.

Currently, she trains under women's head coach Santiago Nieva, focusing on technical precision, fitness, and tactical strategies.

“Working with Santiago sir is fantastic. We have a strong team and are optimistic about our performance,” she remarked.

Gitimoni is the sole representative from Assam in the Indian boxing team. Her selection has sparked optimism that she will uphold the state's esteemed boxing legacy, previously established by Olympians Lovlina Borgohain, Shiva Thapa, and international boxer Ankushita Boro.

Her recent achievements include a silver medal at the Elite Women National Boxing Tournament in Hyderabad last year, followed by a bronze in this year's competition.

Hemanta Kumar Kalita, secretary of the Assam Amateur Boxing Association, expressed his faith in her potential, stating, “This is a significant opportunity for Gitimoni to display her talent. We are hopeful she will continue Assam's proud boxing tradition after Lovlina, Shiva, and Ankushita.”

India approaches the tournament with increased confidence, having delivered strong performances on the global stage. The competition will also provide crucial ranking points as Indian boxers aim to gain momentum in this pivotal season.
