Guwahati, May 3: In light of accusations regarding electronic voting machine (EVM) tampering and worries about the security of strongrooms before the May 4 vote count, Dilip Saikia, the president of Assam's BJP, has dismissed these claims as mere signs of the opposition's acknowledgment of their impending defeat.
Saikia remarked, “The claims of EVM tampering are outdated. They have come to terms with their inevitable loss in this election.” He further suggested that similar concerns should have been raised in states where opposition parties had better performances.
Since the polling on April 9, allegations regarding electronic voting machines have been a recurring theme, with the opposition alliance, led by Debabrata Saikia, raising questions about the electoral process.
Saikia challenged the opposition's assertions about forming the next government, demanding clarity on their claims. “What grounds do they have to believe they will lead the next government? They should provide at least three reasons and clarify the issues they presented to the electorate,” he stated.
He accused the opposition of propagating “false narratives” and asserted, “They might claim they will form the government until late tomorrow night, but it is certain that the BJP-led NDA will secure nearly 100 seats.”
In a jab at a recent meeting of the opposition, Saikia suggested they might not have many more opportunities for their “feast-politics.”
Based on internal evaluations, the BJP leader expressed optimism about receiving a strong mandate. “We have indications that voters supported us with a pro-establishment mindset. From our booth-level committees and Form 17C data, we anticipate that BJP alone will secure over 80 seats. Together with AGP and BPF, we expect to reach close to 100 seats for the NDA,” he explained.
Reflecting on previous electoral outcomes, Saikia noted that in the 2021 Assembly elections, the BJP garnered 33.6% of the votes across 60 seats, while the NDA's total vote share was 44%, with a turnout of 86.2%. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP achieved 37.9% of the votes across nine seats, and the NDA won 11 seats with a combined vote share of 40.4% and a turnout of 81.9%.
For the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections, Saikia mentioned that the BJP is contesting 90 seats, while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodo People’s Front (BPF), are contesting 26 and 11 seats, respectively.
He emphasized that the governance over the past five years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the state leadership has led to “unprecedented development” and has addressed long-standing issues.
