Assam Assembly Speaker Hints at Future Increase in Constituencies

Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjit Kumar Dass has hinted at a potential increase in the number of constituencies in the state. During a recent site visit to the new Assembly complex in Dibrugarh, he revealed that the building is designed to accommodate up to 200 legislators. The government is also revising plans for residential units for legislators, increasing from 126 to around 175. This complex is part of a broader initiative to establish Dibrugarh as the state's second capital, with a budget of nearly Rs 284 crore. The project aims to reflect the cultural heritage of Dibrugarh and is expected to serve as a tourist destination as well. Dass is hopeful that the Assembly will hold sessions in the new complex within three years.

Future Expansion of Assam Assembly Constituencies

Dibrugarh, July 21: Ranjit Kumar Dass, the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, has indicated that there may be an increase in the number of Assembly constituencies in the state. He mentioned that the new Assembly complex being constructed in Dibrugarh is designed to accommodate up to 200 legislators.

During a site visit to the construction area at Khanikar on Monday, Dass reviewed the master plan for the project. He emphasized that the increased seating capacity is aimed at ensuring the Assembly building can adapt to any future rise in the number of legislators.

Currently, the Assembly comprises 126 members. Dass noted that if the number of constituencies grows, the new complex will be equipped to house additional legislators without necessitating any structural changes.

Moreover, he revealed that the original plan to provide residential facilities for 126 legislators is under revision, with the government now considering expanding this to approximately 175 units to meet future demands.

This new Assembly complex is a key part of the Assam Government's initiative to establish Dibrugarh as the state's second capital, with an allocation of nearly Rs 284 crore for the project.

Accompanied by Prasanta Phukan, chairperson of the State Capital Region Development Authority and Dibrugarh MLA, along with district commissioner Bikram Kairi and senior officials, Dass assessed the architectural design and infrastructure plans for the complex.

He also mentioned that the project will include features that reflect the cultural heritage and architectural style of Dibrugarh, while also creating spaces to honor notable figures linked to the city. In addition to serving as the legislative center, the complex is envisioned to become a tourist attraction.

Expressing his optimism regarding the project's advancement, Dass stated that he hopes at least one session of the Assam Legislative Assembly will take place in the new complex within the next three years.
