Assam Assembly Elections: High Voter Turnout Signals Enthusiasm, Says CM Sarma

In a recent statement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the remarkable voter turnout in the Assembly elections, indicating strong public engagement. He noted that participation rates were notably high across various communities, with some areas reaching up to 95%. Sarma expressed confidence in a decisive victory for the BJP-led alliance, projecting over 90 seats in the Assembly. He also commented on the opposition's expected weak performance, particularly for Congress and AIUDF. The final results will be revealed on May 4, determining the true electoral outcome.

Guwahati, Apr 10: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma remarked on Thursday that the Assam Assembly elections have seen an impressive voter turnout, showcasing active participation from various communities.

During a press briefing at Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati after the polls closed, Sarma highlighted that in constituencies like Golakganj, voter turnout was nearly equal in both Hindu-majority and minority areas, with some locations reaching participation rates as high as 95 percent.

“This election has seen an unprecedented level of enthusiasm among voters. The turnout across different communities has been very promising,” he stated.

Expressing satisfaction with the turnout, the Chief Minister expressed optimism that the BJP-led coalition is on track for a significant victory. He estimated that the alliance could secure over 90 seats in the 126-member Assembly, suggesting that surpassing the 100-seat threshold would not be unexpected. However, he emphasized the need for caution while the voting process is still ongoing.

Regarding the opposition's performance, Sarma anticipated a disappointing outcome for them.

“Initially, I believed the AIUDF might not win any seats, but they could manage 4–5. Congress, however, is likely to remain under 20 seats,” he noted, adding that a strong performance by the BJP would greatly diminish the opposition's overall count.

He asserted that the opposition's narrative involving the “three Gogois” had failed to connect with the electorate.

“They will be under pressure until the final results are announced. Voters have not responded positively to the ‘three Gogois’ concept. Conversely, our BJP candidates, including our Gogoi, are expected to win by significant margins,” he remarked.

In response to allegations made by Congress leader Pawan Khera, the Chief Minister dismissed them as unfounded and questioned the party's integrity.

“If the allegations were credible, it would be a different situation. However, making claims and then retracting them only highlights the party's strategy,” he added.

While the BJP is optimistic about its performance, the ultimate decision lies with the voters, with results scheduled to be announced on May 4.
