Assam Assembly Elections: Candidate Scrutiny Underway with Allegations Against BJP Nominee
Candidate Validation Process in Assam Assembly Elections
Guwahati, Mar 24: Following the closure of nominations for the Assam Assembly elections, the scrutiny phase has commenced, confirming 776 candidates across 124 constituencies.
The Chief Electoral Officer's office announced on Tuesday that the verification process has been finalized for 124 out of the 126 Assembly constituencies.
“The verification for the remaining two constituencies, 24 Barpeta (SC) and 65 Dhekiajuli, has been postponed until 11 am on March 25,” the announcement stated.
Initially, 815 candidates submitted 1,389 nomination papers for the elections. However, during the scrutiny, some submissions were deemed duplicate or invalid, leading to a reduction in the candidate count.
Meanwhile, the ongoing scrutiny in Dhekiajuli has attracted attention due to allegations against BJP candidate and minister Ashok Singhal.

Congress candidate Batash Orang has raised concerns regarding alleged inconsistencies in Singhal’s nomination documents.
In a letter addressed to the Returning Officer, Orang stated that he had “compared the nomination form with the documents submitted by the BJP candidate” and claimed to have identified discrepancies.
As of the time of this report, the official Election Commission of India website did not reflect Singhal’s nomination as accepted.
The Election Commission has confirmed that the deadline for withdrawing candidatures is March 26, 2026, by 3 pm.
