Guwahati, April 9: The Assam Assembly Elections 2026 kicked off at 7 am on Thursday, with polling taking place at 31,486 stations throughout the state under stringent security measures.
Initial reports show a steady voter turnout, with 17.93% of the electorate participating by 9 am. Polling stations across Assam experienced a consistent influx of voters since the morning, with many arriving in significant numbers despite overcast weather in certain regions.
Among the early voters were several prominent leaders. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu cast his vote in Dhemaji, while Ashok Singhal participated in Dhekiajuli. Congress representatives Mira Borthakur and Kunki Chowdhury were also spotted voting in Guwahati.
Polling is being conducted across all 126 constituencies, where over 2.49 crore voters will determine the fate of 722 candidates in what is anticipated to be a closely monitored election.

Golaghat:
In Golaghat, early polling was brisk, with a turnout of 18.88% recorded by 9 am. In the Khumtai constituency, Congress candidate Roselina Tirkey voted alongside her father at polling station number 172, while BJP candidate Mrinal Saikia also cast his vote in the same area, accompanied by family members. Ajanta Neog, a candidate allied with the BJP, voted at Baruagaon Fesuwal Muktab Primary School within the Golaghat Assembly segment.
Jorhat:
Jorhat, particularly the notable 100 No. constituency, saw a significant voter turnout of 18.25% by 9 am. The contest between BJP candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami and Gaurav Gogoi, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, has garnered considerable attention. With over 1.48 lakh voters in this constituency, it has become a crucial battleground. Young voters in Jorhat expressed a desire for candidates who prioritize the community over party affiliation. “We want a representative who stands with the people, not just a party,” remarked a first-time voter.
Dibrugarh:
Polling in Dibrugarh commenced smoothly at 7 am, with a voter turnout of 15.65%. A total of 24 candidates are contesting across the Lahowal, Dibrugarh, Khumtai, Duliajan, Tingkhong, and Naharkatiya constituencies, representing major parties including the BJP, Congress, AJP, and independents.
Biswanath Chariali:
In Biswanath, early morning polling saw a healthy turnout, with voters lining up at various centers across the district. BJP candidate Pallav Lochan Das voted at Bishwanath Pahoi Primary School, while Congress candidate Jayanta Borah participated at Kharashimolu Adarsha Higher Secondary School. BJP candidate Munindra Das also cast his vote at Bhimdanga Lower Primary School in the Bihali constituency. The district recorded a turnout of 19.08% by 9 am.
Nalbari:
Nalbari district experienced long queues and active voter participation from the morning, achieving a turnout of 17.46%. Congress candidate Ashok Sharma voted at Devidutta Sharma Primary School, while BJP ally Narayan Deka participated at Haulighat Primary School, standing in line with fellow voters. In the Barkhetri constituency, over 2.19 lakh voters are set to decide the fate of four candidates.
Digboi:
In Digboi, polling proceeded smoothly with a moderate turnout of 17.76% by 9 am. Opposition alliance candidate Dulal Moran and Trinamool Congress candidate Jiten Nag cast their votes at Digboi No. 1 Primary School.
Kokrajhar:
Kokrajhar also reported a promising turnout despite light rain, with 15.75% voting recorded by 9 am. MLA Lawrence Islary voted at Gaurang High School and encouraged peaceful participation. The polling in the district has remained calm and orderly, with a turnout of 15.75% noted by 9 am.
