Guwahati, Mar 23: A total of 818 candidates have submitted 1,391 nomination papers for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly Elections in 2026. The Chief Electoral Officer's office reported that the number of nominations has increased due to multiple filings in various constituencies.
The compilation of these nominations is still ongoing, and the figures may change, as noted in the official statement.
Nominations have been filed across all 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam. The scrutiny of these nomination papers is set for March 24, with March 26 designated as the final date for candidates to withdraw their nominations.
In a related development, the Election Commission of India has appointed Manjeet Singh, a retired IAS officer, as the Special Observer for the elections. He arrived at the state headquarters in Dispur on March 23 and will be available to address concerns from political parties, social organizations, and the public.
Officials have indicated that stakeholders can meet the Special Observer daily from 11 am to 5 pm to voice any complaints or issues regarding the electoral process.
Additionally, voter awareness campaigns have been ramped up across Assam as part of the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) initiative.
Various district-level activities are being conducted to enhance voter turnout and educate citizens about their electoral rights and responsibilities.
These campaigns include street plays, painting and rangoli competitions, slogan writing, digital poster contests, wall writing, workshops, and other creative outreach efforts aimed at engaging the community.
District administrations have also introduced mascots to attract voters, such as 'Bakhor' in Lakhimpur, 'Ganbandhu' in Sonitpur, 'Jolou' in Jorhat, 'Chameli' in Golaghat, and 'Dwimulu and Sikhiri' in Kokrajhar.
Prominent figures have been enlisted as SVEEP icons, including Abhinav Bora, known for 'Lazyguy', associated with Jorhat, and actor Rajeev Duwarah serving as the SVEEP icon in Lakhimpur.
State SVEEP icon and para-cyclist Rakesh Banik will also lead outreach campaigns across various districts to further mobilize voters.
