Assam's Remarkable Rise in Education Rankings

GUWAHATI, Jun 1: Assam has made a notable leap in the national school education rankings, advancing 15 positions to claim the 12th spot among 36 States and Union Territories in the Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 for the 2024-25 academic year, as released by the Ministry of Education.
The state's composite score surged from 511.5 in 2023-24 to 593.6 in 2024-25, elevating its status from the ‘Akanshi-2’ grade band to ‘Prachesta-3’. This transformation has been recognized as one of the most impressive improvements in school education performance across the nation.
Previously ranked 27th, Assam is now among the top third of states and UTs, surpassing several states including Gujarat, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and West Bengal.
The report highlights that Assam excelled particularly in Governance Processes, achieving a score of 85.3 out of 130 and earning the ‘Uttam-3’ grade, a distinction shared by only four other States/UTs in the country. This domain assesses various factors such as digital attendance systems, timely fund releases, integration of out-of-school children, and the use of the Vidyanjali portal.
Furthermore, the state improved its score in Infrastructure and Facilities, obtaining 92 out of 190 in areas related to ICT labs, smart classrooms, sanitation, drinking water, and health services in schools.
In terms of Equity, Assam maintained a commendable ‘Uttam-1’ grade with a score of 227.7 out of 260, indicating effective measures to reduce disparities across gender, social categories, and urban-rural divides.
However, the report pointed out that Teacher Education and Training remains an area needing enhancement, with Assam scoring 53.8 out of 100 in this category, which evaluates professional qualifications, counseling capabilities, and teacher data management systems.
The PGI 2.0 assesses states across six domains: learning outcomes, access, infrastructure, equity, governance, and teacher education, with a maximum score of 1,000. This evaluation is based on data from PARAKH Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024 and UDISE+ 2024-25.
Chandigarh secured the top position in the national rankings with a score of 739.1, followed by Punjab and Kerala, while Assam stands at the 12th position with 593.6 points.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commented on this achievement, stating that Assam is not only focused on building infrastructure but also on ensuring accessibility for all. He emphasized that Assam's leap of 15 places in the PGI 2.0 reflects a commitment to quality education supported by effective governance aimed at prioritizing education for a developed Assam.
