Exciting News from New Delhi's National Zoo

A delightful announcement has emerged from the National Zoo in New Delhi, where the Asian lioness Mahagauri has given birth to three adorable cubs. The zoo administration views this event as a significant achievement, marking the second consecutive time Mahagauri has successfully delivered cubs. Last year, she had five cubs, of which two survived.

Director Sanjeet Kumar shared that the trio of cubs was born to the pair of Mahagauri and lion Maheshwar on Tuesday. The well-being and safety of the newborns are being prioritized, and they are currently housed in a secure maternity enclosure with their mother, ensuring they feel completely safe.

Kumar further explained that a calm and undisturbed environment has been established to support the early development of the cubs. A dedicated team of veterinarians and animal care staff is monitoring the health of the mother and cubs around the clock through CCTV cameras and regular checks.

Previously, Mahagauri and Maheshwar welcomed two healthy cubs, Kartik and Karni, on April 27, 2025.

Kumar noted that Mahagauri has become the first lioness at the National Zoo to conceive again within a year after giving birth since 2009. This occurrence is considered extremely rare in the zoo's recent breeding history.
