Asaduddin Owaisi's Campaign Sparks Political Tensions in Assam

Asaduddin Owaisi's recent campaign in Assam for the AIUDF has escalated political tensions, provoking strong responses from both the BJP and Congress. Owaisi's assertions about the upcoming Chief Minister and calls for justice for cultural icon Zubeen Garg have stirred controversy. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Congress of enabling divisive politics, while Congress leaders suggested a hidden alliance between the BJP and AIMIM. This political contest is heating up as Owaisi continues to challenge both major parties, raising questions about the future political landscape in Assam.

Guwahati, April 4: The political landscape in Assam has become increasingly charged following the campaign visit of AIMIM leader and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who is rallying support for the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). This has elicited strong reactions from both the BJP and Congress parties.

During a rally on Saturday in Chenga, Owaisi passionately advocated for the AIUDF candidate, criticizing both the ruling party and the opposition. He asserted, “If all AIUDF candidates secure victory, neither Himanta Biswa Sarma nor anyone from Congress will ascend to the Chief Minister position. The next CM will be from our community, an MLA from AIUDF.”

Owaisi also addressed the issue of justice for Assam’s cultural figure Zubeen Garg, directing his comments towards the State government. “Before breaking our spine, first tell us what happened to the justice of Zubeen Garg. If Ajmal comes to power, even he will get justice,” he stated.

Highlighting the historical presence of minority communities, Owaisi remarked, “We have been living here for 150 years and will continue to live here.” His statements prompted a strong backlash from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who accused Congress of fostering divisive politics.

Sarma claimed, “Congress has brought Owaisi to Assam to disrupt the social atmosphere and weaponize the population of illegal infiltrators.” He further warned that such rhetoric could embolden illegal Bangladeshi nationals residing in the state.

In response, the Congress party countered Owaisi and the BJP's claims. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee chief Gaurav Gogoi suggested a covert alliance between the BJP and AIMIM, labeling Owaisi as Amit Shah’s ‘B-team’. He argued that since the Chief Minister could not politically benefit from Ajmal alone, the BJP has enlisted Owaisi’s support through Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Earlier in Dhubri, Owaisi had also criticized Congress, branding it the ‘A-team’ of the BJP and accusing it of losing voter trust, further intensifying the political rivalry in Lower Assam.
