Kejriwal's Passport Renewal Application

New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal, the former Chief Minister of Delhi, has submitted a request for a no-objection certificate (NOC) to facilitate the renewal of his passport, which has been expired since 2018.

This application is currently being reviewed by the Rouse Avenue Court, as it pertains to the necessary procedures for renewing a passport while under judicial custody.

In response to this request, the court has issued notices to both the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), instructing them to provide their responses.

The next hearing for this matter is set for June 4.

Kejriwal is presently out on bail related to the Delhi excise policy case, having obtained bail from the Supreme Court nearly six months after his arrest in March 2024 on allegations of money laundering and corruption associated with the now-defunct policy.

His legal representatives informed the court that due to the expiration of his passport in 2018, it is imperative to renew it, which requires court approval.

During the proceedings, the CBI indicated its readiness to advance discussions regarding the framing of charges.

However, the agency raised concerns about the volume of petitions being submitted in this case, noting that the court had previously stated that no new petitions would be accepted at this time, yet numerous petitions remain pending.

On the same day, Kejriwal, along with co-defendants including former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and BRS leader K. Kavitha, participated in the court session via video link.

These proceedings represent a crucial development in the excise policy case, which has experienced significant delays.

After more than two and a half years since its initiation, the corruption case tied to the Delhi excise policy scam finally made headway on May 23.

This progress followed extensive negotiations between the prosecution and defense, particularly concerning the examination of documents. Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh addressed the issues that had hindered the case for nearly a year, despite the CBI having completed its investigation much earlier.

The case had faced 25 adjournments over the past ten months, primarily due to requests from the accused for additional arguments from the prosecution.
