Chief Minister Pema Khandu Commends Zomba's Achievement
On Sunday, Pema Khandu, the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, expressed his admiration for mixed martial artist Sonam Zomba after her impressive defense of the MFN Women's Strawweight World Title. He described her performance as 'inspiring' and a significant achievement for the state.
In a post shared on X, Khandu included a video of Zomba celebrating her victory at Matrix Fight Night 18. He remarked, 'Sonam Zomba's inspiring performance in defending her MFN Strawweight World Title at Matrix Fight Night 18 showcases her determination, discipline, and grace. She has once again made history, becoming a proud symbol of excellence from Arunachal Pradesh and a true inspiration for young athletes across India and beyond.' He further noted that her journey exemplifies perseverance and the spirit of overcoming challenges, congratulating her for enhancing the profile of Indian MMA on the global stage.
Thrilling Third-Round Submission Victory
The 27-year-old Zomba faced Brazil's Maristela Alves in the main event at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Indoor Sports Complex in Greater Noida on Saturday night. Despite Alves' physical advantage and reach, Zomba maintained her composure and tactical discipline to counter Alves' aggressive style. The fight concluded in the third round when Zomba executed a precise double-leg takedown, transitioned to a dominant full mount, and secured an armbar submission. Alves tapped out at 2:14, marking a decisive victory for Zomba.
Zomba's Impressive Winning Streak and Comeback
With this victory, Zomba has extended her unbeaten streak to seven fights since her return to the sport in 2022, bringing her professional record to 7-1. This win also represents her second successful title defense, having previously claimed the strawweight title at MFN 17 with a unanimous decision against Russia's Anna Safeeva.
Training under coach Bhawajit Choudhury at Bidang MMA & Fitness Gym in Assam, Zomba has gained recognition for her grappling skills and adaptability in the octagon. Her recent performances include stoppage victories, dominant decision wins, and a ground-and-pound finish against Shiyin Tan last year. After starting her professional career in 2018 with a loss, Zomba took a four-year hiatus before making a remarkable comeback in 2022, quickly establishing herself as one of India's leading female MMA fighters.
