Kolkata, Aug 14: Police have apprehended Sanjeev Mukherjee, a co-accused in the conspiracy surrounding the rapid cremation of the R.G. Kar rape-murder victim's remains in August 2024 at a crematorium located in Panihati, North 24 Parganas district, as confirmed on Friday.
The accused was taken into custody from a residence in Chinar Park, Kolkata, on Thursday night, according to a police insider.
Earlier that same day, Nirmal Ghosh, the primary suspect in the conspiracy and a former Trinamool Congress legislator from the Panihati Assembly constituency, was arrested in Odisha while hiding.
Ghosh has since been transported back to Kolkata. Both he and Mukherjee are scheduled to appear before a district court in Barrackpore, North 24 Parganas, later on Friday, where the public prosecutor will request their police custody.
Somnath Dey, another individual implicated in the conspiracy and a Trinamool Congress councillor from Panihati Municipality, remains at large.
During a program commemorating the second anniversary of the R.G. Kar rape and murder victim on August 8, Chief Minister Sevindu Adhikari announced a renewed investigation by the Barrackpore Police into the rushed cremation incident. It is believed that the cremation at Panihati was conducted to prevent a second post-mortem examination of the body.
A new FIR was subsequently filed at Khardah Police Station under the Barrackpore Police Commissariat, naming Nirmal Ghosh, Sanjeev Mukherjee, and Somnath Dey, based on a complaint from the victim's father.
Following the FIR, all three accused went into hiding. However, Ghosh and Mukherjee were arrested within the last 24 hours. Authorities are actively searching for the third suspect, Somnath Dey, who is still evading capture.
The body of the female doctor from the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was discovered in a seminar hall on the morning of August 9, 2024. It was later determined that she had been brutally raped and murdered the previous night.
Subsequent allegations indicated that the victim's body was hastily transported to the crematorium in Panihati and cremated without following proper protocols. It is claimed that the cremation was overseen by Nirmal Ghosh, Sanjeev Mukherjee, and Somnath Dey.
