Kolkata, Oct 7: Authorities have apprehended a man accused of impersonating a physician, allegedly leading to the death of a four-year-old following a surgical operation in East Burdwan district, West Bengal. The arrest occurred at Delhi airport, as confirmed by Bengal police on Wednesday.
The suspect, Sheikh Saidul Haque, reportedly performed surgery on the young child at a facility in the Nawabhat region of East Burdwan a few days prior. The child passed away shortly after the procedure, prompting the doctor to go into hiding.
Following a complaint lodged by the child's relatives, law enforcement issued a lookout notice for Haque. He was ultimately detained by Delhi police late Tuesday night, according to Bengal police reports.
As per police statements, Sheikh Saidul Haque had been evading capture in Dubai since the child's death. He was arrested upon his return to Delhi on Tuesday.
After conducting an interrogation and completing necessary legal formalities, Burdwan police transported him to Kolkata by flight, arriving at the airport around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday. He is currently being taken to Burdwan police station for further questioning.
The investigation into the child's death, attributed to the alleged malpractice of the impostor doctor, has raised concerns regarding Haque's medical credentials.
Authorities have indicated that multiple allegations exist against Sheikh Saidul Haque. "He fled to Dubai during the investigation. A lookout notice was issued, leading to his arrest at Delhi airport," a police official stated.
The Association of Private Hospitals and Nursing Homes expressed gratitude to the police for apprehending the alleged impostor. A representative from the association remarked, "We are optimistic that following Saidul's arrest, the fake doctor Zulfiqar and four others identified will also be captured soon. We have complete confidence in the police's efforts."
