On July 28, in Gorakhpur district, Uttar Pradesh, police apprehended a 55-year-old man accused of raping a 35-year-old mentally ill woman outside a temple. The authorities confirmed the arrest on Tuesday.


According to police reports, the incident occurred late at night on July 24. The suspect was identified using CCTV footage from the temple area. The victim is known to frequently wander in the vicinity and often sleeps near the temple.


Details of the Crime

The police stated that around 11:40 PM on the night of the incident, the accused, identified as Deepak Gupta, approached the woman while she was resting on a platform outside the temple and allegedly assaulted her. Local residents noticed her condition the following day and reviewed the CCTV footage, which led them to promptly inform the police. A complaint was subsequently filed by the temple priest.


Police Response and Investigation

Vivek Trivedi, the station officer of Pipraich, reported that the suspect was identified through the CCTV footage and was arrested on Tuesday. During interrogation, Gupta reportedly confessed to the crime. The victim underwent a medical examination, and her statement was recorded. The police are prioritizing the investigation to ensure strict legal action against the accused.


Ongoing Legal Proceedings

Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Gyanendra Kumar stated that the arrest was made possible through the CCTV evidence, and legal proceedings are underway.
