Army Chief Issues Strong Warning to Pakistan Over Terrorism Shelter
General Upendra Dwivedi's Stark Message to Pakistan
On Saturday, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi delivered a stern warning to Pakistan regarding its harboring of terrorists, stating that the neighboring nation must decide whether it wants to be part of geography or history. This statement came shortly after India commemorated the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack that claimed 26 lives. General Dwivedi was addressing attendees at a session held at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi.
When asked how the Indian Army would respond if circumstances similar to those of Operation Sindoor arose again, General Dwivedi reiterated his previous remarks, emphasizing that if Pakistan continues to provide refuge to terrorists and engage in activities against India, it must make a choice about its future.
Operation Sindoor was initiated on May 7 of the previous year in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack. Under this operation, the Indian Armed Forces conducted precise strikes on multiple terrorist bases belonging to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Following this, Pakistan attempted to target Indian military and civilian installations, prompting a counter-response from the Indian Armed Forces, which was part of Operation Sindoor. The conflict lasted nearly 88 hours, after which Pakistan's DGMO contacted his Indian counterpart to request a ceasefire. Although the four-day military engagement concluded on May 10, Indian leadership has consistently stated that Operation Sindoor was merely postponed, warning Pakistan against any further provocations. The Indian Army also confirmed that it successfully maintained control throughout the four days of conflict.
Strategic Insights from Army Leadership
During a press conference on May 7, Lieutenant General Rajeev Ghai, the Army's Deputy Chief (Strategy), asserted that there are no safe havens across the Line of Control. He stated, "We will strike everywhere. We will target everything, and this has been made clear by the new normal announced by the Prime Minister last year. However, the circumstances, timing, and method will be determined by us."
