AR Rahman Sparks Controversy Over Hindi Film Industry Dynamics
AR Rahman's Insights on the Film Industry
In a recent discussion with a media outlet, renowned music composer AR Rahman shared his views on the evolving landscape of the Hindi film industry over the last eight years. He suggested that a shift in power dynamics, potentially influenced by communal factors, has contributed to these changes.
His comments ignited a political debate, with members of the ruling party dismissing his assertions while opposition figures voiced their concerns.
During the interview, Rahman mentioned that he often learns about projects that do not materialize through indirect channels. He expressed that individuals lacking creativity now hold decision-making power, which he hinted might be tied to communal influences, albeit not directly experienced by him.
Reflecting on his early career in the 1990s, Rahman stated that he was unaware of any prejudice at that time, attributing this to a possible divine concealment of such issues. However, he acknowledged a noticeable shift in the past eight years.
As an artist, Rahman emphasized his preference to avoid films that are created with negative intentions, asserting that audiences possess the ability to discern quality and are not swayed by divisive narratives.
In response to Rahman's remarks, the ruling party firmly rejected his claims, asserting that the Hindi film industry operates on the basis of talent and merit rather than religious affiliations.
Union minister Ramdas Athawale expressed his disagreement with Rahman's perspective, highlighting the presence of numerous successful Muslim artists in the industry, including prominent figures like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, and Aamir Khan, who enjoy widespread popularity.
BJP Minority Morcha president Syed Bhasha also refuted Rahman's claims, stating that opportunities in the film industry are determined by a project's success rather than the political climate. He noted that Rahman has had significant successes since 1992, including acclaimed works like Slumdog Millionaire and Madras Cafe.
Bhasha further pointed out that Shah Rukh Khan received the National Film Award for Best Actor in 2025 for his performance in Jawan.
Conversely, opposition leaders expressed their dismay regarding Rahman's statements. Congress leader Husain Dalwai labeled the situation as unfortunate, emphasizing that sidelining a talent like Rahman due to his religion would be detrimental to both the film industry and the nation.
Congress MP Tariq Anwar also called on the government to address the issue raised by Rahman.
