April Weather Surprises: Fog and Rain Hit Northern India
Unexpected Weather Changes in April
As April begins, the weather has taken an unexpected turn, leaving many surprised. Rainfall accompanied by strong winds and patches of fog have been reported in various regions, a rare occurrence for this month. Experts are investigating the reasons behind this unusual weather pattern.
Fog Blankets the City
Just a day ago, parts of Delhi-NCR were enveloped in fog or light haze. Similar conditions were observed in Rajasthan. Experts attribute this change to recent rainfall, a drop in nighttime temperatures, and increased humidity. The fog was a result of several factors converging over the past 48 hours.
Occasional Weather Patterns
Meteorologists noted that light rain on Friday raised humidity levels, while a slight temperature drop and clear skies overnight contributed to condensation and the formation of light fog. The recent cooler temperatures and rainfall have led to fog in certain areas of Delhi NCR, a phenomenon sometimes seen in late March and early April.
Temperature Records
On Saturday, the minimum temperature was recorded at 20.7 degrees Celsius, which is 1.9 degrees above normal. However, this temperature is still low enough to facilitate fog formation under humid conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicated that the recent western disturbances and associated cloud cover have played a role in moderating temperatures and affecting humidity levels.
Reduced Rainfall
Despite the onset of fog, the afternoons have remained pleasant with temperatures below the typical levels for early April. The maximum temperature reached 32°C, approximately 2 degrees lower than normal, resulting in mild warmth during the day. The Safdarjung weather station recorded only 0.5mm of rain in the past 24 hours.
Potential Showers Ahead
Some areas experienced notable changes, with Ayanagar receiving 5.8mm of rain. The IMD reported that light to very light rain occurred across most parts of Delhi in the last 24 hours, accompanied by strong winds and cloudy skies. They predict that the weather will remain mild in Delhi over the next few days, with intermittent clouds and a possibility of light rain or thunderstorms on Sunday evening.
Rising Temperatures Expected
Experts also indicated that temperatures are likely to rise on Sunday and Monday, with rain expected on Monday night due to the influence of western disturbances on cyclonic circulation in the region. Active western disturbances are anticipated to affect northwestern India around April 7 and 8, bringing thunderstorms and strong winds to Delhi-NCR starting Monday night.
Weather Warnings Issued
This hazardous weather system is shifting from northern India towards central regions. On Sunday, there is a risk of severe storms and high winds in Jhansi, Gwalior, and several areas of central Uttar Pradesh, with wind speeds potentially reaching 60-70 kilometers per hour, posing a threat to trees, power lines, and temporary structures. Additionally, rainfall in Rajasthan and Haryana has already caused significant damage to crops.
