Anticipated Cabinet Reshuffle in Central Government Ahead of Key Elections
Major Cabinet Changes Expected Soon
A significant reshuffle in the central cabinet is anticipated between June 15 and 18. Reports suggest that the BJP leadership is preparing for political and organizational restructuring ahead of crucial assembly elections, which may involve the removal or transfer of over a dozen ministers, including several state ministers. According to party insiders, at least two cabinet ministers and three state ministers are likely to exit the government. A senior cabinet minister may soon be tasked with leading the BJP in a politically vital southern state.
This reshuffle is expected to bring changes in the leadership of 10 to 12 ministries, with several ministers being reassigned to different departments.
Strengthening Representation of NDA Allies
The cabinet reshuffle is also likely to enhance the representation of NDA allies. Sources indicate that parties such as Janata Dal United, Telugu Desam Party, Nationalist Congress Party, and Rashtriya Lok Morcha may receive additional ministerial positions. While most coalition partners are expected to gain representation at the state minister level, one or two leaders could be included in the cabinet. Reports suggest that the BJP is focusing on regional balance, caste representation, and electoral strategy while finalizing these changes.
Ongoing Organizational Changes Within BJP
This reshuffle comes amid ongoing organizational changes within the BJP. Recently, Pankaj Chaudhary was appointed as the BJP president for Uttar Pradesh, while Harsh Malhotra has taken over as the new president of Delhi BJP. Sources indicate that this reshuffle could lead to changes in 10 to 12 ministries, including key departments such as Railways, Finance, Corporate Affairs, Coal, Textiles, Information and Broadcasting, Electronics and IT, Rural Development, Agriculture, Water Resources, Environment, Cooperation, Fisheries, and Law.
Some ministries currently managed under additional responsibilities may soon have dedicated cabinet ministers. There is also a possibility of appointing a new state president for Karnataka, with the current cabinet minister potentially taking charge of the party unit in the state. The BJP is preparing to announce a new party president for Manipur as well, with indications that cabinet representation for Manipur may be facilitated through the Rajya Sabha.
Youth Representation and Organizational Responsibilities
Several ministers completing their terms in the Rajya Sabha may be assigned organizational responsibilities. Additionally, in an effort to provide opportunities for younger faces, leaders over the age of 70 are being reviewed. Insiders have hinted that some leaders from the BJP front may enter the central cabinet for the first time based on their organizational experience and performance. There are also speculations that to maintain electoral balance in Bihar, a cabinet minister may be replaced by another leader from the same social category.
