Ankush Panghal's Remarkable Achievement

Ankush Panghal's victory in the men's 80kg boxing category at the Asian Games 2026 is being celebrated as a significant milestone, according to his father, Suresh Panghal. The Indian boxer triumphed over South Korea's Kim Min-seong in the final held in Aichi-Nagoya, adding to his accolades after winning the Commonwealth Games 2026 title in Glasgow. Suresh expressed pride in his son's accomplishments, stating, "This is a monumental achievement; he previously secured a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. His dedication has been immense, and he has nurtured a love for sports since he was young. I have been involved in sports myself, so you could say he is continuing our family's legacy."

Dominant Display in the Final

In a commanding performance, Ankush became the first Indian male boxer to win an Asian Games gold since Amit Panghal's victory in the men's 49kg category at the Jakarta 2018 Games. He started the final match with an aggressive approach, targeting Kim's body with powerful right hooks and uppercuts. A warning issued to the Korean boxer worked to Ankush's advantage, allowing him to take the first round with a score of 4-1.

Continuing his momentum, Ankush controlled the second round with swift combinations and effective counter-punching. Although both boxers landed body shots, Ankush's relentless aggression and movement secured him a 5-0 win in that round.

In the final round, Kim attempted to regain control with counter-punches and movement, but Ankush maintained his lead on the judges' scorecards, ultimately absorbing the late challenge and being declared the winner.

Celebrating Hard Work and Dedication

Ankush dedicated his gold medal to his family, coach, and his regiment, the Indian Army's 6 Grenadiers, emphasizing that this success was a product of his hard work and self-belief.

Family Reflects on His Journey

His sister, Anju, shared insights into his journey in boxing, recalling his past achievements. "He faced Korea in his final bout at the Asian Games today in Japan, and it was a challenging fight. He has previously earned silver and bronze medals in the Youth category and also secured a silver medal at the Boxing World Cup in Delhi," she noted.

This victory marked India's third boxing gold medal of the day at the Asian Games, further enhancing the nation's impressive performance in the sport.
